Welcome to Southern Sage!
Updated: May 24, 2019
Just in case you missed it, I'm Chelsea and this is Southern Sage Photography. I am so happy you're here! This site has been a dream in the making for quite some time now, and I can't believe it is finally out there for the world to see. Before we get into the technical stuff, I wanted to just tell you a bit about me. But, where to start?
Well if you didn't already know, I am a fourth generation Tampa native, a high school English teacher, the wife to an incredible man (and fellow English teacher...but that's a story for another blog post!) and fur-mom to a sweet sleepy pup named Doak (Go Noles!)
I've enjoyed every aspect of photography since I was a teenager. I used to host impromptu photo shoots with younger family members in my backyard, directing them into different locations and poses. In college, my freelance journalism career pushed me to teach myself how to work a camera well enough to capture news-worthy moments as they happened in front of me. But as my teaching career began and I started to share my love of journalism, design, and photography with my students, I realized that something was still missing...I still wanted more.
In my 4th year of teaching, I found myself sitting around feeling like I wasn't filling my creative void. I would go to work, come home, and do it all over again. Don't get me wrong, I love my job. Teaching is one of the greatest learning experiences I've ever had (ironic, right?) and yet, something was still missing. Just a few weeks before our wedding, I looked at my husband, Erich, and said "I'm finally going to do it. I'm finally going to be a photographer. Like...for real." His reaction was the same as always when I say crazy things. He smiled, said "Hell yeah you are!" and turned back to the football/soccer/rugby game he was watching.
So, we got married, went on an amazing honeymoon, and got back to work to finish the school year. With every spare minute I had that wasn't consumed by grading papers, answering emails, and distributing the yearbook (Again...another blog for another time) I started to immerse myself in the world of photography. I already had the equipment and the knowledge for a solid foundation and I was ready to build on it! I watched every free webinar I could find (Thank you Amy & Jordan and Katelyn James!) and took pages of notes. I had no experience when it came to gathering clients or even posing them for that matter and it only took a couple of weeks to feel overwhelmed by how much there was that I just didn't know. But I didn't give up. I made goals, set deadlines, and pushed through, and well, here we are. Southern Sage Photography.
Now, that was a bit long winded, wasn't it?
I hope you've made it this far!
As a teacher, I am well aware that there is always room to learn and grow, but I am so blessed to have the opportunity to do so. I hope you will enjoy the ride with me! Check out the SSP blog every week for new entries about life, marriage, photography, teaching, and more!
